Swimming on the weekend at the NSW Championships, 12 year old Maya Suzuki has defended her State Title and taken out First Place in the 100m Freestyle. In an exciting race Maya also achieved a National Qualifying Time, to take GOLD in 1:02.65. The winning margin being nearly a second, similar to last year. Shortly turning 13, Maya will be competing against the best in Australia at the National Titles in Brisbane come April. She is only the second female in the history of the club to qualify for Nationals. Allyssa Hale also qualified when she was only 13. Maya was also a finalist in the 12 years 200m Freestyle, placing 5th in a time of 2:20.79 and finished 27th in the 100m Breaststroke. Both freestyle swims were personal best times. The club would like to congratulate Maya on her amazing results as she just keeps making history for our Club.

CENTRAL TABLELANDS FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP MEET – GLENBROOK – Sunday 3rd February.
The club would like to see every member that can swim 50 metres compete in the first District Championship carnival for the season. We are the largest club in our district and all members should support this meet at our home pool. These carnivals are for everyone of all levels. From 7 years & under (that can swim 50m) to 60 years & over. Races are swum similar to our pointscore races where ages are mixed (separated into gender) but seeded according to times. There is also a handicap race for the younger swimmers. School carnivals will be starting shortly and this will give a good indication of ability and fitness.
CTS booklets have SOLD OUT. Please refer to the website (www.ctsa.net.au) or the glass notice board near the toilets, which list the program events for all the carnivals. CTS entry summary sheets are available from Joanne Hale. Cost is $2.50 per swim for CTS Championship events and $3.50 each for the Sprint Meet. All entry sheets are due to Joanne by Monday 21st January. The introduction of a computerised recording system for the carnival necessitates data input prior to the carnival day. The District is trialling a seeded program for the meets which will be available to purchase on the day. Combined CTS 1 & CTS 2 are on one program at a cost of $5. Please note your intention to purchase a program on your summary sheets as extra programs will not be printed.
Start Time at Glenbrook is 10.00 am. Warm up from 9.00am. These are great carnivals with team spirit in fine tune. A total of 9 relays are swum over the course of the day. These become quite exciting with a lot of enthusiastic cheering. Every effort is made to include swimmers in at least one relay.
SPEEDO SPRINT MEET –KATOOMBA – Saturday 9th February
This season the CTS Sprint Meet will be held at Katoomba. Start Time: 1.00pm. This meet includes events from 8 & under to 30yrs & over and only 50m of each stroke. This is a great meet for those wanting to practice their 50m swims for their school carnival. These heats are held state-wide with the fastest two from each age group (8yrs & under to 13yrs), being chosen to represent the district in the State Finals at Homebush Pool on 9th March. Many of our younger swimmers make it through to Homebush, with the opportunity to swim at the Olympic pool very exciting. See Joanne Hale for Entry Sheets. Cost is $3.50 per race. Entry Sheets are due in Monday 21st January. Please indicate intention to purchase a program (Cost $3).
CENTRAL TABLELANDS 2ND CHAMPIONSHIP MEET - LITHGOW – Sunday 10th February
This is the second District Championship carnival. It commences at 10.00am with warm up from 9.00am. Members interested in swimming need to submit their entry summary sheet by Monday 21st January to Joanne. Cost is $2.50 per race.
The James Brophy Memorial Meet is hosted by ACT Swimming and is an inter-district competition held at the end of the summer season at the Canberra International Sports and Aquatic Centre, Belconnen. Invited Country Districts select 2 swimmers per event giving 2 heats per event with results on a timed final basis. The meet consists of 50m events in all strokes in single age groups from 8 years & under to 16 years & over plus freestyle and medley relays. CTS selectors will base their choice of swimmer, firstly, on those that have filled in a nomination form; times achieved at CTS meets; and attendance at those meets. Any swimmer interested in being considered for selection for the Brophy Team must fill out the form available from Joanne for consideration. These forms must be handed in to the recording table at CTS Meet 2 (10th Feb) at the latest. The CTS selectors will then advise you if your application has been successful. Swimmers are encouraged to attend all CTS meets held prior to 10h February. This inter-district meet will be held on 30th March and is a fitting culmination to summer swimming. It is a social weekend away with the Glenbrook part of the team staying together to bond – both swimmers and parents!!

COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP ENTRIES
Those swimmers who hope to compete at the NSW Country Championships will be required to have their entry cards submitted to Joanne by Monday night 4th February. They will be posted to NSW on Tuesday 5th Feb. The club will be entering the team in the March Past and hopes to win back the trophy. March Past practice will begin soon.
OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS: These recommence on Monday 28th January. Cards need to be submitted by 14th January, (tonight) - two weeks in advance.
CLUB AGE CHAMPIONSHIPS: These will commence on 4th February and all members are expected to participate. A pointscore event is also run on championship nights so you continue to get your two swims. Please check your club booklets for events and remember Championship Cards (pink) need to be submitted at the table two weeks in advance. Therefore those events scheduled for Monday 4th Feb need to submitted by Monday 21st January. These cards are available from the ladies at the table outside the canteen (10c each). If you know you will be away in the coming weeks then get your cards in now. For convenience, cards for every event can be submitted all at once. If the swimmer has not swum that particular distance they are still eligible to attempt the event. Extra timekeepers (3 per lane) are needed for all championship events so please make yourself available to give some time. Age grouping for championships is the age the swimmer was at 1st October, 2007. Any level of swimmer can compete in the championships.
RETURN SURVEYS
The Club committee has decided to
extend the return date for the survey. Closing date is now the end of January.
We have had a reasonable response to date but we would like to get a significant
response from our members. Please remember that each member has a voice and for
that reason we are asking for a returned survey from each club member in your
family. The return box is located at the information table on club nights. The
results from this survey will enable the committee to look at any changes that
the members feel necessary.
PROMOTIONS OFFICER
The club is looking for someone to become
Promotions Officer. The role will be to take initiatives throughout the season
to promote the existence of Glenbrook Swim Club in an endeavour to increase our
membership. Please see President Brad Kidd for more details.
STROKE CORRECTION for Glenbrook Swimming Club Members will recommence at Glenbrook Pool on Monday 4th February from 5.00 pm – 6.00pm. This is FREE for members but pool entry will apply. Swimmers must be at least 6 years old and swim 25m unassisted. The response from swimmers and families has been very pleasing this season and will continue with the current numbers. Swimmers will find Stroke Correction very helpful for those that want to compete in the school carnivals, that are fast approaching. Defining strokes, instruction in diving and racing guidance will assist those swimmers and boost confidence. The program will concentrate on the strokes being held at Club that night, which will be helpful with age championships starting.
RECORD ATTEMPTS/QUALIFYING TIMES
A reminder that all Record / Qualifying time attempt cards MUST be submitted to Leonie Kidd. Please do not approach the ladies at the table with these cards or put them in the night’s boxes. Leonie is required to check the details on the cards, advise the referee and initial all cards before being processed by the race ladies. Remember is attempting a qualifying time at club for a higher level meet the correct procedure must be following or the time will not be recognised by NSW Swimming. If in doubt always submit a qualifying time attempt card especially when attempting records.

CARNIVAL QUALIFYING TIMES
Qualifying times set down by Swimming NSW must be able to be verified by NSW officials. This is a condition of entry at all meets conducted by Swimming NSW i.e. Country Regionals, Country Champs and State Champs. If a qualifying time is obtained at
· a district approved carnival – the hosting club/district must submit these results to Swimming NSW within 7 days of the meet
· club night level – the race secretary and referee must be made aware of the attempt prior to the swim (Glenbrook swimmers submit an orange QT card). To be approved the swim must have an official starter and referee. The starter and referee (who checks the times on the stop watch) must sign the relevant form. This form must then be submitted by the race secretary to Swimming NSW within 7 days to be official.
If a swimmers swims slower than the qualifying time, and the time submitted by the swimmer is not able to be verified, then the Club/Swimmer is fined – currently $100.00.
It is part of the race secretary’s responsibility to ensure all qualifying times can be verified before sending entries to NSW. Please note there is a period of time where qualifying times can be accepted. For example the Country Championships being held on 23 & 24 Feb 2007 will only accept times achieved since 1st October 2006. Check with your race secretary (Joanne Hale) if you have any questions regarding this subject. Times achieved at training can not be used.
