NEWSLETTER  NO. 1                 OCTOBER, 2007

Welcome to the Summer swimming season for 2007/2008.  A special welcome back to members returning for another season and a warm welcome to all our new members.  We hope your family enjoys your time with the club this year and makes some new friends.

We encourage all members to read their club booklet, to understand the running of the club and Monday night procedures.  Refer any questions to the Club Information Officer or to any Committee representative.  Please support our club sponsors that are mentioned in the booklet, where possible.  We wish every member the best for the new season and that your time with the club is enjoyable and rewarding.

Ensure all cards are submitted by 6.45pm on Club night so that they can be collated and seeded according to times.

Note: Pointscore cards can be submitted a week in advance but must be given to the club night race secretaries, i.e. the ladies at the table outside the canteen.

Liaison Officers - Leonie Kidd & Jo Purcell have volunteered their time on a Monday night to be Liaison/Information Officers.  They are situated inside the front entrance and are available to assist with any queries or suggestions.  Please make yourself feel welcome to have a chat with them.  They are available to assist members in any aspect of swimming.  There are also many other club representatives mingling amongst the families to offer advice and help.

Swimathon - Saturday 17th November, 2007, Glenbrook Pool  10.00 am - 1.00 pm.

We urge every member to join in the fun of the Swimathon.  This will be our main fundraiser for this season.  It is a terrific way for swimmers to achieve their longest distance swim.  Any stroke can be used even dog paddle and back float, as long as the swimmers donft stop or touch the bottom.  Swimmers enjoy the challenge of drinking and catching gSnakesh, while treading water for an energy boost.  Last year, one of our youngest members, Gemma Morgan aged 3, got a huge thrill by completing a total of 4 laps.  While our longest distance went to Alexandra Stallard (11) with 156 laps (7.8km).  There will be a FREE BBQ for all swimmers.

Sponsorship forms are available from the Information Table and club website.  Register your interest at the Information Table or see organiser – Cameron Morgan.

Certificates will be presented to all swimmers at Presentation Night.  There will be a prize for the person who swims the furthest distance and the person who is the highest fundraiser.   See attached flyer for more information.

2.

Officials -  No sporting club can operate efficiently without you, the volunteer.  Please can you lend a hand, especially timekeeping and running the cards from one end of the pool to the other.  A lot of our timekeepers are swimmers so they will need to be relieved to swim their race.  Introduce yourself to a timekeeper, and observe, or assist.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Club Website www.glenbrookswimmingclub.com.au.  Check out the new look website.  Kaz Suzuki has updated this for us and has done a terrific job.  Please take some time to have a look.   The website has news, photos, results and information.  For any articles or ideas please see Brad Kidd or Kaz Suzuki. Thank you Kaz.

Official qualifications – We have a small amount of members that are interested in becoming qualified technical officials.  Qualifications available are:  timekeeper, finish judge, check starter/marshall, starter, recorder, referee. Please see Brad Kidd or Fred Ireland.  Copies of the lecture notes are available.  The Club really needs more technical officials.  So please step forward.

Club Clothing – All members are encouraged to purchase the club uniform.

Please see the apparel table, inside front entrance, for sizes and prices on clothing. Come and try on some samples.

Club Costume:  The club has a club costume which is very dramatic and makes our swimmers stand out as a team.  These have been made by Nova Costumes in QLD  and  are available to be ordered along with other training costumes.  Those members who have worn Nova costumes in the past know they are a long lasting costume and of good quality. Samples are on display.  Club costume orders will take about six weeks. Orders will close soon.  Full payment is not required until the order is received however a deposit would be appreciated.  Orders after this date could take 2-3 months.

Club Shirts: There will be only one order of Club shirts for the season because of the minimum number required to place an order.  Get in early before the order closes.

Old club stock is now on sale at greatly reduced prices.

Swimming Caps:  Silicone Club caps are available for purchase at any time. If any member has had a problem with the cap splitting, please return it for an exchange.

Drink Bottles:  Club drink bottles are available for purchase at a cost of $3.00.

Tattoos:  Removable tattoos are available for 50c each.   Great fun at carnivals and club nights.

Goggles and fun caps:  As part of our fundraising we have a selection of modern goggles in various colours and sizes available for order.  Also some silicone caps with trendy designs.  These items are from Engine.  For every item ordered the club will receive a donation from the company.  Note the caps can only be used for training and club nights not carnival competitions.  This is according the Swimming NSW rules. Brochures are available from the information table.

Large Coats – Orders are now being taken for the large blue coats.  These are terrific on the cool club nights and early morning training sessions.  You will see many swimmers around pool deck with them.  The coats are very popular.  They will cost about $100-$110 depending on the number ordered.  See Joanne Hale for sizes and ordering.  Generally the order only takes about two weeks.

3.

Glenbrook Festival Annual Open Carnival – Cancelled for this year.

Unfortunately due to lack of officials and time constraints, this years carnival has been cancelled.  This carnival is a major contributor to our yearly fundraising.  We will now be undertaking other avenues to raise funds for our club.  So please support our efforts.

Sunblock –  The Club has sunblock available to purchase.  Tubes are $6 and Roll-ons $5.

Most children will have the school swimming scheme this term and will need some sunscreen. Throw some in their swimming bag.  We have boxes available to take away and sell to friends and workmates.  This will add to our fundraising efforts this season. See attached flyer.

Central Tablelands Swimming: Invitational Meet – Sunday 25th November.

Glenbrook Club is part of the Central Tablelands District which includes clubs from Bathurst,,Portland,Lithgow,Katoomba,Lawson and Springwood.  The Central Tablelands District Swimming will be conducting two championship meets as per last season.  Progam Books are  available for purchase for $4 from the information table.

The First district carnival will be the Long Distance/Invitational Meet on Sunday 25th November at the new Aquatic Centre at Bathurst. Start time 9.30am Entries close Mon. 5th November. For all aspiring long distance swimmers this is your opportunity to shine. The program is on the glass notice board.  See Joanne Hale for cards or further information.

The first District Championship Meet is in February (dates are listed at the end of this newsletter). All entries are computerised and will only require a summary sheet this year. Entries, for both championship meets and the sprint meet, will close two weeks before the first carnival (Monday 21st January). Anyone wanting to enter on the day of the carnival will be charged an extra $1.00 per swim.  The intention is to have programs for sale as a result of some requests.

BBQ Night Our first club BBQ night will be Monday 29th October.  We need two volunteers to help with the cooking of the BBQ.  Please see Information Table if you can help.

No Record Attempts  will be run in the first two weeks of club. This will give everyone time to settle back in.

Club Captains & Vice Captains:  Nominations are being taken for Captains – Male and Female. Forms must be handed back in by 19th November.  The committee will vote at the meeting on the 20th November. Captains must be at least 14 years of age and vice-captains a minimum of 12 years of age. Requirements in fulfilling this position are:  handing out newsletters, selling raffle tickets, assistance with younger swimmers in 25m races, participation at all CTS carnivals, helping out where necessary.   Register your interest by filling out the Nomination Form available from the information table.  The club committee will vote on the most suitable nominees for the positions.

Stroke Correction for Glenbrook Swimming Club Members will be held at Glenbrook Pool.

The day and time is still being organised with Pool Council.  Please listen to announcements for further details.  This is FREE for members but pool entry will apply. Swimmers must be at least 6 years old and swim 25m unassisted.  Adults are most welcome to join in.  All interest parties are asked to see Karen Terry, Kaz Suzuki or the Information Table.

4.

Open Championships - The first event (50m Freestyle) will be held on 5th November.  Open championship events are for any age providing the swimmer can  swim faster than the generous qualifying times. (See book for times). Please note championship cards will be due in TWO weeks prior to the scheduled event (i.e.22nd October).  A list of swimmers entered will then be placed on the notice board one week before, for any discrepancies.  Please refer to club booklet for more information.  All championship cards (Age & Open) can be submitted all together.

Glass Notice Board – This has been updated with the season calendar, upcoming carnivals and various qualifying times – Summer Country & State.  Any questions see Joanne Hale.

Country Regional Camp:  Early in 2007 Christine Kidd (15) was selected by NSW Swimming to participate in the Country Regional Camp.  This was held at SOPAC, Homebush during the October school holidays.  NSW Development selectors based this decision on Christinefs performance at the Country Regional Meet held in Cowra last January.  Previous club swimmers to be selected for participation at the Camp have been:  Allyssa Hale and James Pike (twice).  All participants have found this camp to be very worthwhile, gaining valuable experience from top coaches and the opportunity to create new friendships with other Country swimmers.

2008 Country Regional Meet:  Our Club is targeting the Ulladulla Meet.  This meet is held over two days (26 & 27th January).  We are anticipating a large squad to be in attendance.  The consensus amongst the swimmers was to pick a beach location this year.  Tentative accommodation has been booked at Burrill Lake Tourist Park – 10 Cabins (6 x 5 persons - $190/night + 4 x 6 persons - $220 per night) plus 4 tent sites.  Please call the park on 4455 2811 for bookings.  Mention gGlenbrook Swim Clubh.  Due to the location and time of the year it was difficult to find reasonably priced accommodation with 2 night stayover.  Other accommodation in the area was a minimum 5 or 7 night stay.  There are other tent sites available for those keen. It is only a four minute drive to the pool from the Park.  More information is on the mobile notice board or see www.burrilllaketouristpark.com.au

Glenbrook swimmers have had an enjoyable time at these meets in the past.  It is a terrific social weekend away and many come home with medals.  Keep in mind that Monday 28th is the Public Holiday, so make a long weekend of it. Entries are due in to Joanne Hale by Monday 7th January, 2008.

All swimmers aged 12-15 are encouraged to apply for selection for the Country Regional Camp.  NSW selectors base their decision on results from this meet.  Those interested should speak with our own past participants (Allyssa, James and Christine).

Other Regional meets are being held at Cootamundra and Coffs Harbour.

Winter Inter-Club Competition:  Special thanks to all swimmers who supported this competition.  Racing was held on a fortnightly basis from May to September at Springwood Pool. This was the second year winter club competition has been run at Springwood.  Numbers started high but dropped off over winter. Thanks to Club Referee Fred Ireland and all parents for their organisation and assistance on club nights.

Error in Club Booklet – Please amend your booklets to read – 9th February CTS Sprint Meet at Katoomba – Start 1pm.  10th February CTS Champs meet 2 at Lithgow Start 10.00am.

5.

All Qualifying Times and Record Attempts are to  be referred to Leonie Kidd. A different coloured card is to be used for each of these swims. Orange for Qualifying Times and Yellow for Record Attempts.  If attempting both at one time you will need two cards.  Do not put these cards in with the point score cards give them to Leonie for ratification by the referee.  For non-scheduled record attempts, cards need to be given to Leonie one week in advance.  All 800m & 1500m swims will now be required to be entered one week in advance with an indication of best time on the card.  These distances will not be accepted on the night. This is to ensure enough time is allowed to swim these distances.  In some instances the long distance swims will be held from 6.30pm.

SOPAC Meet – Saturday 20th October – A reminder to those competing at this meet that the start time has been moved back to 12.30 with warm-up at 11.30.  The time-line is on the mobile notice board.  This is the first long course carnival for this season.  Good luck to those competing.
